Reba always makes me think of Homer and Grandpa making Simpson and Son Revitalizing Tonic. Or maybe that episode makes me think of Reba. Whichever, really.

Automatic reblog for use of the pie chart to explain a fantastic Phish tune.

I made beer

It worked this time.  Pumpkin Ale.  Oh, not only did it work, but it is FUCKING DELICIOUS!  I had a friend who tried it yesterday tell me they would buy it.  Also, I still haven’t gotten the hang of reading the hydrometer, so I don’t know for sure, but my best guess is the ABV is about 7-8%.  So yes, pretty strong, though the taste wouldn’t tell you that.  It’s really drinkable, tastes like a good ale with pumpkin but doesn’t end up tasting like pumpkin pie, like some pumpkin beers do.

I’ll post a picture of it soon, but I don’t have any in the fridge tonight.  I’ll rectify that soon for your viewing pleasure.

Job, Job, Job…

I had a phone interview early last week for a really good job in an ideal location, and I think I kind of rocked the interview.  The next step is the candidates get whittled down to 3 and the organization flies the candidates out to meet board and staff.  I haven’t heard anything yet, but haven’t lost hope completely as I figure they’ll probably start whittling things down after this holiday weekend, and the job listing is still posted on the company website.

However, if past experience has taught me anything, it’s to expect that the job is already gone to someone who is more predictable for the job (for some reason my varied experience tends to make me unemployable, though maybe a second Master’s degree that I’m getting will change things a bit).  So there it is, I didn’t get the job.

…can I has the job, please?

Nigel Tufnel Day is fast approaching. How will you celebrate? With cups and cakes, I hope.

I will be celebrating by rocking out with my band that night.  Oh yes, and turning it up to 11! (okay, maybe not that loud, after all, we are playing at a coffee company that night, but whatevs)

Occupy Oakland News Update of the Day: The thousands of Occupy Oakland protesters who participated in yesterday’s General Strike were ultimately successful in their effort to shut down the city’s port.
The Port of Oakland ceased normal operations yesterday evening after it was flooded with protesters. Work resumed around 8:30 this morning local time, with no reports of injuries or property damage.
International Longshore and Warehouse Union communications director Craig Merrilees said productivity loss was “relatively minor” due to an unrelated issue concerning dangerous containers from Vietnam that had already prevented the evening shift from doing its job.
A notable incident occurred around 7:30 PM, when a silver Mercedes-Benz sedan struck two protesters after the driver allegedly became annoyed at the “streams of marchers” blocking his way. Cell phone footage of the incident — which appears to show a protester hitting the vehicle before being run over — can be seen below:

According to BART Police Deputy Chief Daniel Hartwig, the wounded protesters were taken to Highland Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The driver was allowed to leave the scene after a brief interrogation. Oakland PD is reportedly conducting an investigation.
The protests became progressively more eventful as the night wore on. While the vast majority of protesters were peaceful, the early morning hours were marred by violent clashes between police and “a roving group of about 100 mostly young men” who walked around downtown committing various acts of vandalism.
“Thanks to a splinter group of protesters in Oakland last night, the news today is leading with imagery of burning barricades and headlines about property destruction,” wrote Salon’s Justin Elliott.
At least 80 people were arrested overnight, including Susie Cagle, the daughter of influential editorial cartoonist Daryl Cagle. Her father wrote on his blog that Susie was arrested while attempting to peacefully march with others toward the police station.

Message of Love - Band of Gypsys

Often credited as Jimi Hendrix and the Album called Band of Gypsys, except that at the time the act was billed as Band of Gypsys.  This is not Jimi Hendrix Experience (backed by Noel Redding on Bass and Mitch Mitchell on Drums).  Instead, this is from the New Year’s ‘69/’70 shows at the Fillmore East and the lineup is Billy Cox on Bass and Buddy Miles on Drums.  That may seem like a subtle distinction to most, but the formula of Band of Gypsys made for a much tighter rhythm section that ties down the insanity of Hendrix’s guitar (whereas the Experience often sounds as spaced out and messy as Hendrix).  It’s really a great example of Hendrix’s roots when he was playing around the Chitlin circuit before he made it big.  The whole original album, and subsequent release of the rest of the show are just amazing.  Definitely worth repeated listening.

Fuck yeah, legroom!!!

Misattributed Quote of the Day: “I mourn the loss of thousands of precious lives, but I will not rejoice in the death of one, not even an enemy.”
You’ve undoubtedly seen this quote somewhere online today, most likely attributed to Martin Luther King, Jr. It’s both pensive and timely; certainly looks like something a nonviolent activist such as King would say.
Unfortunately, he didn’t. And neither did anyone else before today, when the originator of the quote took to Twitter and decided to pretend to quote King.
“What do you get out of saying something pithy, and getting no credit for it?,” asks The Atlantic’s Megan McArdle. “Perhaps they only wanted to say this thing, and knew that no one would pay attention unless it came from someone else,” she posits. “Or, perhaps they are getting a gargantuan kick out of seeing people repeat their lie ad infinitum.”
As Abraham Lincoln once said: “On the Internet, nobody knows you’re not quoting Martin Luther King, Jr.”

Whoa!  I’m back on tumblr!  I know it’s been awhile.

To make up for things, here’s a cover that my band Missionary Lizards did of Neil Young’s “Hey Hey, My My”.  First gig without one of our singers and the keys player is on hiatus, but the addition of second guitarist, Ben Lundell is fantastic!

Enjoy!
